Basalt Assault™
The name of this event was created simply to provide something catchy and memorable rather than a purely hardcore ride. The start location at Basalt High School was designed for the more casual enthusiast seeking a scenic ride as well as the festival latecomer who needs to catch up with friends without taking on the 36 miles gap.
Road or mountain bicycles are appropriate as riders pedal along side the Fryingpan River. The first half of this ride is a steady, but gradual 13-mile uphill climb to the dam at Ruedi Reservoir. You will ride past the Boat Ramp up to the aid station with an spectacular overlook. Here you can relax and enjoy some refreshments before deciding whether you want to press onward about another 8 miles to the mouth of the reservoir with views of Mt. Massive.
Your ride home is all downhill to Lion's Park in Basalt but you can expect by a late afternoon breeze coming up the canyon. If you choose not to press onto for the last 18 miles back to Aspen, be comforted knowing that will we have SAG wagons stationed near the red caboose to bring you back to even more festivities at Rio Grande Park.
Centaspin™
This is the hardcore century ride for you animals. It begins at Rio Grande Park about 20 miles away in Aspen before connecting up with the Basalt Assault™ route. The added distance will seem like nothing early in the day because it is all downhill on smooth, clean frontage roads and the scenic Rio Grande Trail. The traffic is rather sparse along this 35 mph route because the majority of the cars and trucks take the faster Highway 82. You will find that the local residents are very courteous to bicyclists. |
